Spanish DELE exams

If you are learning Spanish and one of your goals is to pass a DELE Exam or if you have been preparing for this qualification and now you feel like you need a little help, we can help you.


What are DELE exams?


Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE). These are the official exams of the Instituto Cervantes that accredit your knowledge and level of Spanish. If you want to work for a company in Spain, you will most likely be asked for this diploma. With this qualification you will be able to prove that you really know how to speak Spanish.


There are different 6 CEFR levels for DELE exams:


Spanish Diploma Level A1 (Breakthrough).

Spanish Diploma Level A2 (Waystage).

Spanish Diploma Level B1 (Threshold).

Spanish Diploma Level B2 (Vantage).

Spanish Diploma Level C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency).

Spanish Diploma Level C2 (Mastery)


- Spanish Diploma Level A1 (Breakthrough) certifies that the candidate can use and understand commonly used expressions in the Spanish-speaking-world to satisfy immediate needs.


Exam format:


Reading comprehension (45 minutes)

Listening comprehension (25 minutes)

Writing (25 minutes)

Speaking (10 minutes)


- Spanish Diploma Level A2 (Waystage). Certifies that the candidate can understand commonly used, everyday phrases and expressions related to areas of experience especially relevant to them (basic information about themselves, and their families, shopping, places of interest, work, etc.).


Exam format:


Reading comprehension (60 min)

Listening comprehension (35 min)

Writing (50 min)

Speaking (30 min: 15+15)


- Spanish Diploma Level B1 (Threshold). Certifies candidates’ capacity to understand the gist of clear texts, in standard language, if they involve well-known topics related to work, studies or leisure. It also certifies students’ ability to deal with most situations that occur while travelling in areas where Spanish is spoken; to produce simple and coherent texts about familiar topics, or topics of personal interest; and lastly to be able to describe experiences, events, wishes and hopes, as well as to be able to briefly express opinions or explain plans.


Exam format:


Reading comprehension (70 min)

Listening comprehension (40 min)

Writing (60 min)

Speaking (30 min)


- Spanish Diploma Level B2 (Vantage). This exam certifies the candidates’ capacity to understand the essentials of complex written and oral texts. The texts can be technical in nature or about abstract topics. The candidate can communicate fluently with any speaker about different matters and defend his point of view.


Exam format:


Reading comprehension (70 min)

Listening comprehension (40 min)

Writing (80 min)

Speaking (20 min)


- Spanish Diploma Level C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency). The candidate can communicate fluently in any Spanish variety. He can understand the complexity of oral and written texts in academic contexts.


Exam format:


Reading comprehension (90 min)

Listening comprehension (50 min)

Writing (80 min)

Speaking (20 min)


- Spanish Diploma Level C2 (Mastery). The candidate can express himself spontaneously in any situation. He can understand everything he hears and reads in spite of its complexity or abstraction level. He is very precise with Spanish grammar and semantics.


Exam format:

Reading and listening comprehension (105 min)

Integrated abilities: reading, listening and writing (150 min)

Speaking (50 min)
